than 14 inches of snow fell in wichita. only one other storm in the city's history was worse. that was more than 50 years ago. >> let's go to wichita. how are people dealing with this much snow? >> reporter: well, most schools and universities in kansas and missouri are closed today. businesses throughout the region were closed all yesterday. they opened a lot later today. and the kansas government also started a little later today, around 10:00. usually they're in earlier. but here is the warning that the kansas officials sent out to residents. this is pretty good. please clear off hoods and roofs of your vehicles before driving. of course you don't want big chunks of snow obstructing your vision, but all the roads are open and they're pretty clear today. >> we know kansas, missouri declared states of emergency. do you have a lot of folks stranded on the roads? >> reporter: there were some. the national guard patrolled about 800 miles of roads throughout kansas. they helped about 70 stranded cars. the good news is that there was zero deaths, 106 accidents, 15 injury, but peo

in and around the kansas city area. lighter blue, six to 12 easily. that could include the chicago area. they have not seen a lot of snow this season if you can believe it. winter weather advisories for all the areas in pink. those are winter storm warnings. we have ice storm warning where we could see significant icing. very dangerous. people are urged to stay off the roads where we're getting ice. there is kansas city, miss sourcery, that bull's eye where we could get 12 to 18 inches of snow. some places we're getting a snowstorm they haven't seen in last couple years. the snow plows are out, people are shovel-ready. the snow side of the storm we'll see hail, damaging wind and even tornados in the area you see in yellow. luckily no warnings yet but we'll keep you posted. we'll watch the icy mix up through missouri, illinois, into ohio into friday. we'll still be talking about this storm. john and jenna, if i could, the moisture associated with the cold front, part of that could develop into a nor'easter that could bring some heavy snow totals to new england, areas that saw one, two, t

about 40 minutes to the southeast of vatican city. this is st. thomas's church, one of only three designed from the ground up. it's the center piece of a pea yat is a here like so many. you have the requisite fountain. this is a little town that has been since the 1620s the summer residence of popes and will be the first place that benedict comes to retire after february 28th. and of course, anchoring this beautiful pea yat sda is the residence. you can see these huge doors. it doesn't look that big, but what's behind it is extraordinary because once you open those doors, you have -- look they are opening it it. we almost caught it. behind those doors you have a big courtyard which is on sundays when he's in residence here, he does do his sunday audience. but there's a huge villa with panoramic views of rome. the space between the villas and gardens behind these doors is bigger than all of vatican city with the most extraordinary views including the lakes that you can see over to the right. it gives you a sense of what pope benedict will be seeing once he's no longer pope. e we do
